Evidence of Effectiveness
Results from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) published in 2015 supported the effectiveness of SSIS for elementary school students. This evaluation included 432 grade 2 students enrolled in urban and rural schools in the U.S. Northeast (46% white, 18% Black/African American, 18% Latinx). This evaluation found that students who participated in the program experienced a significant decrease in teacher-reported internalizing behaviors and increase in teacher-reported academic engagement compared to students in the comparison group (outcomes reported four months after baseline while controlling for outcome pretest).
Results from an RCT published in 2018 supported the effectiveness of SSIS for elementary school students. This evaluation included 696 grade 1 students enrolled in urban and rural schools in the U.S. Northeast (70% white, 24% Black/African American). This evaluation found that students who participated in the program had significant improvements in teacher-reported academic engagement, motivation, empathy, and social engagement compared to students in the comparison group (outcomes reported four months after baseline while controlling for outcome pretest).
