Evidence of Effectiveness
Results from a quasi-experimental evaluation conducted in the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 academic years (unpublished report written in 2014) support the effectiveness of Manners of the Heart for elementary students. This evaluation included 1,760 students (at post-test) in grades K-5 in an urban school district in U.S. Southeast region (over 80% Black/African American; 84% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch (FRPL)). This evaluation found that kindergarten students who participated in the program demonstrated significant positive change in standardized reading scores, and that participating grade 5 students demonstrated significant positive change in standardized mathematics scores compared to students in the control group (outcomes reported approximately nine months after baseline). However, the evaluation also found that grade 2 students in the control group outperformed treatment students on standardized mathematics scores. Moreover, outcome pre-test scores were not adjusted for in analyses.
